The Earthship, Stanmer Park

The Earthship at Stanmer Park has become an icon of Brighton and Hove’s environmental community. Built by Mischa Hewitt of the Low Carbon Trust it was the first of it’s kind in England, and was so radical that at the time of building construction was delayed while the Environment Agency invented a new licence allowing the use of car tyres as a building material.

John Parry, an environmental education researcher, set up the Railway Land Wildlife Trust in 1988. Its aim was to turn the former railway sidings at the edge of the A26 in Lewes into a local nature reserve and education resource.
Over the years the challenges have been numerous, with each initiative taking huge effort and planning. The restoration of a signal box, for example, took a staggering seven years to complete.

The Brian Foster Centre was created eight years ago, resurrecting a derelict building in the nature reserve at Dorothy Stringer comprehensive school in Brighton. As well as providing an education resource for pupils at the school, the aim is to make the building an illustration of possible sustainable retrofitting techniques that could be used in other buildings.
